Every provider has its strong points and weak spots. By clarifying for yourself what you are looking for in a Usenet service provider, it will become far easier to make the right choice.
1. Newshosting
- Score: 93%
- Retention: 3300+ days
- Data limit: No limit
- Connections: 30
- SSL-protection: Yes
- VPN: Yes
- Newsreader: Yes
- Prijs: From €$8,33 per month
Newshosting is an excellent Usenet provider, and it terms of quality it really is on par with Tweaknews in our opinion. The retention time is even a bit better; Newshosting offers more than 3300 days retention, which means files are stored on their servers for almost 10 years! The number of connections is a bit lower than Tweaknews, but Newshosting still offers 30 simulteanous connections which is absolutely fine generally. All things considered, Newshosting is a superb choice for people who want to utilize Usenet’s maximum potential. Newshosting comes with a good newsreader, which is especially interesting for novices. Furthermore, If you opt for the special annual package of $8,33 per month, you will also get a basic but good VPN service.
2. Tweaknews
- Score: 93%
- Retention: days
- Data limit: No limit
- Connections: 40
- SSL-protection: Yes
- VPN: Yes
- Newsreader: Yes
- Prijs: From €7,50 per month
Tweaknews is our favorite Usenet provider at this moment. And that is due to several reasons. First of all, the connections are fast, especially when you are situated in Europe. Also, there is an awesome newsreader called UsenetWire. Especially for beginners this is a very user friendly and easy way to download from newsgroups. It saves you a lot of hassle, since you don’t need NZB sites and all files will be automatically unpacked and repaired. You can pay with iDeal, credit card and Paypal. And the more extensive packages come with a very decent VPN service.
3. Easynews
- Score: 85%
- Retention web: 365 to 2900+ days
- Retention NNTP: 3300+ days
- Data limit: 20GB to 150GB
- Connections: 60
- SSL-protection: Yes
- VPN: Yes
- Newsreader: Yes (web browser)
- Price: From €$9,98 per month
At Easynews there is something peculiar going on regarding the data limits. Depending on which package you choose, you will get 20, 50 or 150 GB of data. If you then decide to use your own newsreader instead of the special web browser offered by Easynews (which serves as a newsreader), then the amount of data available to you doubles. For the Big Gig Plan your data limit even disappears. Even though the web browser is great, if you are tight on data you might prefer to use your own newsreader. We do want to give Easynews credit for the ‘Members area’ on the website and the web browser you can find there. It works wonderfully well, and it probably makes Easynews the most user friendly provider for rookie Usenet users. If you want to read more about the web browser offered by Easynews and how it works, make sure to check out our Easynews review.
For the cheaper packages you can choose to get a VPN for only $2,99 per month extra. With the Big Gig Plan, this VPN is already included. But, we do have to state the Big Gig Plan is quite expensive. Easynews honors its name; it’s a very easy to use and nice service to use. But convenience and user friendliness comes with a certain price tag. We do think there is quite a significant audience for such a service though!
Conclusion
With Usenet you can download with great speeds and in the highest quality. The selection of movies, series, music and software available to you will be greater than with any other streaming service or database. Compared to torrent networks, Usenet is safer and faster. If you’re interested in getting started with Usenet, we recommend trying out a subscription at one of the mentioned providers and see how you like it. Most people become great fans of Usenet once they get the hang of it. The problem Usenet faces is that it seems a bit more complex than alternatives (torrents, streaming services). Our purpose as a website is to help you overcome this perceived complexity, so you as well can benefit from all the advantages Usenet has to offer. And it all starts with a subscription to a provider, hence our list of top newsgroup providers.
